The Back Green Rally

Favoured we were with the most excellent weather seen this year, on both days too! Someone knew that this was the 40th. Anniversary of the event (you must discount 2001) and arranged matters accordingly and to celebrate this the local brewery prepared a special bottle of real ale for every participant. The ale was sponsored by Connie, and Steve and Bev of The Old Crown. Callum Ives, a long-time event supporter designed the bottle label which is also replicated on the commemorative “T-shirt”. The routes, 56 miles on Saturday afternoon, 50 miles on Sunday morning and a short afternoon run of 22 miles were well thought out, the questions were easier than usual (I actually got 4 correct) and to cap it all, the sun shone bright and clear all weekend. There was a special award and celebration of those who had competed most frequently over the 40 years. This list included Gerry Beer with 36 appearances, David Wilson 35, Ronnie Pears 35, Brian Smith 34, Alan “Ajay” Johnson 32, C G Stephenson 31, Barry Tyreman 30, Ian (Capt. Birds-Eye) Ives 30 and John Robinson 30. There were 14 people with more than 20 appearances and Brenda Hallard was the top-scoring lady on 21. In all some 537 people have entered during the 40 years of the event. I’m sure that all entrants will wish to join me in thanking Paul and Jo, Graham and their team for putting so much time and effort into the organisation of such a wonderful event.
